Suvradip Maitra

Suvradip’s doctoral research focuses on empirical and socio-technical approaches to understanding how data, biometrics and AI technologies are entwined with colonial, gendered and racial power structures. In particular, he is researching socio-political agendas and framings embedded in digital identity and national AI projects in the majority world, with a focus on India. He holds an MPhil in Ethics of AI, Data and Algorithms from the University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor of Science/LLB (First Class Honours) from the University of Queensland.

He has been involved in various projects researching the impact of technology on society, including at ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society (ADM+S), Cambridge University’s Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence and Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Centre for Internet and Society. He has presented his work at prestigious conferences, including the Many Worlds of AI Conference at the University of Cambridge and the Sustainable AI Conference at the University of Bonn.

His research has been published in peer-reviewed publications, including the Australian Law Journal and Proceedings of the AI and Ethics Society Conference, as well as renowned media outlets such as The Conversation and Tech Policy Press. He has also practised as a privacy lawyer at the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, commercial lawyer at Corrs Chambers Westgarth and Brookwater Legal and was a judicial associate in the Queensland Court of Appeal.
