When global crises like COVID-19 arise, governments need the autonomy to introduce policies that safeguard a range of social determinants of health. Yet, governments could face lawsuits from private companies for emergency measures to the tune of billions of dollars. Dr Ashley Schram, Deputy Director of the Australian Research Centre For Health Equity at the School of Regulation and Global Governance, discusses how our current international trade and investment systems open governments up to these lawsuits and why this is a time to rethink our global governance infrastructure.
