The Centre for International Governance and Justice and RegNet warmly congratulates PhD scholar Suzanne Akila on the submission of her thesis, entitled ‘Participation and the Protection of Citizens Abroad in International Law’.

Suzanne’s thesis addresses the questions of how and why States protect their citizens abroad. It examines the practice of protection by Germany, Mexico and Australia, with a focus on how States use legal and non-legal mechanisms to resolve matters of protection. While the classical framework of international law recognises and endorses the centrality of States in the protection of their citizens, this thesis argues that many actors participate and influence outcomes at the international level.
