We are delighted to announce that Professor Sharon Friel has been elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) for her important contribution in health and medical research in Australia. An ARC Laureate Fellow and Director of the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse and Menzies Centre for Health Governance at RegNet, Professor Friel is internationally recognised for her work on the social and environmental determinants of health equity.

Professor Friel says it is a great honour to be recognised by her peers in health and medical sciences.

“My work cuts across many disciplines in health and social sciences, and for the Academy of Health and Medical Sciences to recognise the importance of such interdisciplinary work is a real testament to emphasis that the Academy puts on disciplinary diversity and policy focused research.”

She will be using the important platform of the Academy to continue to research and advocate for action on health equity and on the intersections between climate change, social inequities and health.

Her Fellowship appointment alongside 30 others was announced at the Gala Dinner and Fellowship Admission Ceremony in Melbourne. The video citations can be viewed here.

The AAHMS elects Fellows as recognition of their outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions in the field of medical and health sciences. The Fellowship are acknowledged for their clinical, non-clinical, leadership, industry and research contributions. More about the Academy here.
