Kate Henne to lead new ARC Discovery Project in gender inclusion efforts in Australian sports

Generating novel insights into the governance of gender inclusion in Australian sports is the main focus of a new project led by ANU RegNet Director, Professor Kate Henne.

Professor Henne, alongside Associate Professor Ruth Jeanes (Monash University), Dr Fiona McLachlan (Victoria University) and Dr Madeleine Pape (University of Lausanne), have secured funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) for their project, Governance for Gender Inclusion: Levelling the Field in Australian Sport as part of the 2022 ARC Discovery Projects.

The project aims to understand why, despite gains in women’s sport participation, gender inclusion efforts in Australian sport have not yet led to gender parity in leadership roles or broad accessibility for marginalised groups. The project promises to generate new knowledge about the regulatory mechanisms and social conditions that facilitate change through the development of a new interdisciplinary conceptual framework.

Project outcomes include enhanced analytic guidelines and robust recommendations for governance strategies, which can be applied to study other domains. This aims to provide significant theoretical and policy benefits by supporting equity in professional settings and health promotion through wider inclusion.

Professor Kathryn (Kate) Henne is the Director of the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet). An interdisciplinarily trained scholar, she has a PhD in Criminology, Law and Society with a specialisation in Anthropologies of Medicine, Science and Technology from the University of California, Irvine.
