The RP Anand Essay Competition was set up in 2011 in memory of Professor Anand’s seminal contributions to international law. The winning essay in the inaugural competition is CIGJ PhD graduate, Usha Natarajan’s ‘A TWAIL Reading of the Arab Spring: Reflections on Sovereignty over Natural Resources’.

The essay is an extended version of a speech given at the 2011 Asian Society of International Law’s panel honoring Professor Anand, with Judge Xue Hanqin (ICJ), Professors Antony Anghie, BS Chimni, M Sonarajah and Surya Subedi.

Usha completed her PhD at CIGJ in 2009 and is currently Assistant Professor of international law at the American University in Cairo.
