Dr Mathieu Leclerc

PhD
Lecturer in Archaeology

I received a BA and an M. Sc. in Anthropology from Université de Montréal and a PhD in Archaeology at the Australian National University. My PhD thesis examined the technological and compositional characteristics of Lapita and post-Lapita pottery from Vanuatu through LAICPMS analysis.

I am an early-career researcher and archaeologist, with affiliations to the School of Archaeology & Anthropology (ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences), the School of Culture, History and Language (ANU College of Asia and the Pacific), and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage.

My primary research interests involve using archaeological science techniques to investigate the interconnections between artefact production, technological organisation, population movements, exchange networks, and the environmental conditions affecting raw material selection.

I also have an interest in non-traditional research outputs and am actively engaged in outreach activities outside academia, thanks to collaboration with the ACT History Teacher Association.

I participated in archaeological excavations and/or have worked on archaeological collections from a wide range of sites in Canada, United States, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Australia, and New Caledonia.

Research Interest

I use my expertise in petrographic microscopy and biomolecular archaeology to understand manufacturing processes and usage patterns for pottery and other artefacts.
