Roderic Broadhurst is an Emeritus Professor at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) and Fellow at the Research School of Asian and the Pacific, Australian National University (ANU). Research Interests include crime and modernization, homicide, criminal behaviour, organized crime in China and Asia, and crime in cyberspace.
He was formerly the Deputy Director of the Australian Research Council, Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security, ANU. Hon. Professor at Griffith University (2008-2010) and the University of Hong Kong (2005-2009). He was Secretary and Chair of the Hong Kong Criminology Society (1998-2006), Head of the School of Justice Queensland University of Technology (2005-2008), external assessor City University of Hong Kong (2004-2014) and non-residential fellow of the Korean Institute of Criminology (2017-2019). He was also founding fellow of the Hong Kong Centre for Criminology (1998), associate editor of the ANZ Journal of Criminology (1999-2004; editorial board 2005-2012) and foundation editor of the Asian Journal of Criminology (2005). He is also on the editorial board of Global Crime, Pakistan Journal of Criminology, and the International Journal of Cyber Criminology.
His career as a criminal justice practitioner and researcher spans over 45 years and has included work in prisons, remote area public health, organized crime, homicide investigation and cybercrime. A long-standing interest in reducing the risks of re-offending and the rehabilitation of offenders informed by restorative justice has guided and motivated his research. He directs the ANU Cybercrime Observatory and has taught courses on crime theory, cybercrime, and violence.
The ANU Cybercrime Observatory, which was established in 2012 with colleagues Professor Peter Grabosky, Dr. Lennon Chang, Dr. Steve Chon, Dr Raymond Choo, Dr. Mamoun Alazab, Ms Brigittte Bouhours and Dr Nyguen Tran. The Observatory is a focal point for research on human factors and cybercrime and publishes work on illicit crypto-markets, malware, and other contraband traded on the darkweb. He has been researching cyber-security related topics since convening the 1st Asian Cybercrime Summit at the University of Hong Kong in 2001.
He has been awarded Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery grants, Hong Kong Competitive Research Grants and Criminology Research Council grants. His research includes studies of lethal violence, victimization, and longitudinal research applying risk analysis to problems of recidivism and dangerous offending. Current research focuses on cybercrime and organized and transnational crime.

He also served on the ARC/ACOLA ‘Securing Australia’s Future’ Expert Working Group on New Technologies (ARC LASP Research Program for PMSEIC) (2013-2015). He was director and board member of the Cambridge Australia Scholarship (2016-2022).
