Semester begins at RegNet with Policy and Practice of Regulation

.

Last Friday marked the start of the semester at RegNet, with students coming together for the first session of The Policy and Practice of Regulation course, REGN8050. Convened by Associate Professor Jarrett Blaustein, the class welcomed a strong cohort attending both in person and online.

The course brought together students working in government agencies and professionals who work closely with regulatory systems across business, industry and community sectors, or who are preparing to do so in the future. Students engaged actively in discussions throughout the session and drew on their diverse professional experiences, creating valuable opportunities to learn from one another.

The course is designed to help individuals and organisations understand and apply contemporary Australian and international approaches to effective regulation. Key topics include regulatory complexity, risk assessment, responsiveness, compliance, regulating technology and managing stakeholders. Using case studies, practical assessments and examples of regulatory practice from Australia and internationally, the course takes an applied approach that encourages collaboration and discussion among participants.

Throughout the course, students explore core ideas in regulation and compliance, examine the strengths and limits of different regulatory approaches in the Australian context and analyse the role of diverse regulatory actors. They also apply insights from Australian and international case studies to real-world regulatory challenges.

The class marks a strong start to the semester, and we look forward to welcoming students across several upcoming RegNet courses in the months ahead.
