RegNet scholars join NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence led by University of Adelaide

Congratulations to Australian Research Centre for Health Equity (ARCHE)’s Professor Sharon Friel, Associate Professor Ashley Schram and Dr Nicholas Frank, who are part of the investigator team for the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) on Shaping Markets for Health Equity. This project will be led by Professor Fran Baum, from The Stretton Institute at The University of Adelaide.
The Centre of Research Excellence on Shaping Markets for Health Equity is designed to improve the health of Australians by identifying ways to mitigate negative impacts on social equity and health from commercial practices. The team will identify policy, regulatory, business and civil society initiatives likely to reduce negative health impacts and enhance positive ones.
The CRE will examine how:
- Investments for profit can undermine the quality of services
- Privatisation of government services can weaken human wellbeing
- Business practices can impact on health for consumers and employees
It will also devise solutions to shape markets so that their health damaging practices are minimised and population health equity is maximised.
The CRE scheme supports research that aims to improve health outcomes and promote or improve translation of research outcomes into policy and/or practice. CREs awarded in 2025 will provide support for teams of researchers to pursue collaborative research and develop capacity in basic science, clinical, health services, One Health and public health research.
