New EFRJ Practice Guide on Environmental Restorative Justice

In 2025, the European Forum for Restorative Justice (EFRJ) published Restorative Justice Approaches for Environmental Harm: Practice Guide, an international resource introducing the principles and practice of Environmental Restorative Justice. The Guide aims to support those interested in using restorative approaches to respond to environmental harm by providing practical guidance, resources and examples from different jurisdictions.

The Centre for Restorative Justice is pleased to have contributed to this publication through the work of its members. Professor Miranda Forsyth is an author of the Guide and lead author of Chapter 5, which explores the preventative potential of restorative justice in environmental decision-making. Distinguished Emeritus Professor John Braithwaite wrote the Preface, and Felicity Tepper served as Editor of the Guide while also contributing as a co-author.

The Guide features eight international case studies from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, Brazil, South Africa, Japan and Nigeria, illustrating how restorative justice has been applied in response to a wide range of environmental harms. It also includes checklists, outreach resources and recommendations to support policymakers, regulators, practitioners, researchers and communities interested in applying restorative approaches to environmental harm.
