New Approaches for Responding to Environmental Harm

In June 2026, Professor Miranda Forsyth participated in an online webinar hosted by the Oxford Centre for Restorative Practice exploring new approaches to responding to environmental harm through restorative justice. The event highlighted the recently published Restorative Justice Approaches for Environmental Harm: Practice Guide and explored how Environmental Restorative Justice could be further developed within the United Kingdom and beyond.

As Co-Director of the Centre for Restorative Justice and a lead author of the Practice Guide, Professor Forsyth shared insights from international research and practice, drawing on the Guide's principles, case studies and practical resources. The webinar also featured Professor Ivo Aertsen (KU Leuven), Professor Liz Fisher (University of Oxford) and Lawrence Kershen KC, bringing together expertise from restorative justice, environmental law and mediation to discuss emerging opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The discussion considered how restorative approaches can complement existing environmental law and regulatory frameworks by fostering dialogue, accountability and collaborative problem-solving among communities, regulators and responsible parties. Through presentations, a case study and audience discussion, participants reflected on practical pathways for responding to environmental harm and strengthening the future development of Environmental Restorative Justice in policy and practice.
