We are delighted to announce the academic promotion of Nick Bainton to Professor at the Australian National University, effective 1 January 2026.
As an anthropologist, Professor Bainton has spent the last 20 years leading research on the social and political impacts of resource extraction in the Pacific Islands region and beyond. His current research is focussed on one of the greatest governance challenges of our time: the impacts of supplying the raw materials needed for global energy transitions under already existing conditions of climate change.
His work has been published in many books and leading journals, and he serves as the Director of RegNet’s vibrant Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs.
Congratulations to Professor Bainton on this outstanding achievement, a recognition of his many contributions to the field and to the ANU community.
