New research - 21st century capitalism and innovation for health

Susan Sell’s latest article ’21st Century Capitalism and Innovation for Health’ has been published in Global Policy. The article looks in depth at two features of 21st century capitalism: monopoly capitalism, based upon stringent intellectual (IP) protection that suppresses economic competition; and Wall Street capitalism, or financialisation, that prioritizes value extraction over value creation to maximize shareholder value. It then draws out some of the contemporary trends in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, digital health, and regulatory change which demonstrate some of the negative impacts of 21st century capitalism on public health.
