Emeritus Professor Peter Drahos argues that if political leaders want to produce a COVID-19 vaccine quickly, they should share vaccine knowledge because “vaccine nationalism” will only have adverse effects.
He also warns that in the COVID-19 vaccine race, governments should not forget to focus on safety and effectiveness and that incomplete interpretations of data among regulators could lead to serious mistakes. As a result setting up an independent COVID-19 vaccine review process that runs in parallel with the work of pharmaceutical regulators is critical.
