Jon Altman on indigenous homelands under the hammer
Emeritus Professor Jon Altman argues in an opinion piece published in Crikey on March 11 that the Prime Minister’s recent comments on indigenous Australians living in communities demonstrate no consideration of ‘any demographic, historical or legal facts, let alone issues of social justice and basic human rights’.
His comments echo that of former Senator, Amanda Vanstone, who characterised indigenous homelands as ‘cultural museums’ and this same discourse has been used to justify the decision of the Western Australian government to ‘close’, or as Jon argues ‘neglect’ communities.
