The research proposal explores intercultural communication models, theories and challenges faced by Australian Government Representatives as international diplomats in Japan, focusing on different cross-cultural communication protocols, theories, models and values that can create significant misunderstanding and confusion in international negotiations and dialogue, including comparisons between direct and indirect communication modes.

About the speaker

Emi Terpstra is a Japanese language educator with over 10 years of teaching experience at ANU, including as a lecturer, tutor and research assistant. She has developed and taught Japanese language course content at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels at ANU. She has a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (Japanese) from the University of New South Wales, and a Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching from the University of Technology Sydney.
