The Australian National University boasts a long tradition of creative international legal scholarship. It is, for one, the only institution that counts among its ranks - past and present - three female scholars who have been awarded the prestigious Certificate of Merit for a preeminent contribution to creative scholarship of the American Society of International Law. These are: Judge Hilary Charlesworth (2001) Professor Anthea Roberts (2018), and Dr Ntina Tzouvala (2022).
For this hybrid event, the Centre for International and Public Law, ANU College of Law and the Centre for International Governance and Justice, RegNet join forces to celebrate this unique achievement. The three speakers will converse on matters of creative legal scholarship, women in academia, legacies, and prospects.
About the Speakers
Hilary Charlesworth is a Harrison Moore Professor of Law and a Melbourne Laureate Professor at Melbourne Law School. She is also a Distinguished Professor at the Australian National University. Her research includes the structure of the international legal system, peacebuilding, human rights law and international humanitarian law, international legal theory, particularly feminist approaches to international law, and the art of international law. Hilary received the American Society of International Law’s award for creative legal scholarship for her book, co-authored with Christine Chinkin, The Boundaries of International Law. She is a Judge of the International Court of Justice - the first Australian woman elected to the ICJ and only the fifth woman elected ever.
Anthea Roberts, a Professor at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet), is an interdisciplinary researcher and legal scholar who focuses on new ways of thinking about complex and evolving global fields. Her research areas include international law, trade and investment, the effect of geopolitical change on global governance, and understanding and navigating complex systems. Anthea is the Director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice and chairs the ANU Working Group on Geoeconomics. She formerly taught at the London School of Economics, Columbia Law School and Harvard Law School.
Ntina Tzouvala is an Associate Professor as well as the the LLM Director and Deputy HDR Director at the ANU College of Law. Her work focuses on the political economy, history and theory of international law. She is especially interested in historical materialism, deconstruction, feminist and queer legal theory. Her work has also appeared in leading journals, including the European Journal of International Law, the Leiden Journal of International Law and the UCLA Law Review.
