This presentation outlines Kristian's progress and preliminary findings for the Mid-Term Review of his PhD candidature.

This presentation outlines Kristian Hollins’s progress and preliminary findings for his Mid-Term Review. Kristian’s project examines how protection decision-makers navigate the constitutive tensions of refugee status determination in practice. He will discuss data collection, early analysis, and theoretical development, while outlining the pathway to completion.

About the speaker

Kristian Hollins is a PhD Candidate and Sir Roland Wilson Scholar with the Department of Home Affairs. Kristian’s research considers how administrative decision-makers make findings of fact in the absence of verifiable evidence. Through the lens of protection obligations assessment, he examines how decision-makers exercise their discretion in probing, weighing, and constructing their assessment.

Dual-trained in journalism and law, Kristian has spent the previous decade working in Protection Assessment, in both operational and policy roles, as well as legal, decision-making, communications, and reform areas.
