The Australian Cybercrime Observatory brings together Adelaide University’s recognised strength in data science and software development with ANU’s deep domain expertise to provide a sovereign Australian service for partners in government, law enforcement, intelligence and defence. We hold subject matter knowledge from internationally recognised researchers with backgrounds in criminology, computer science, data science, mathematics, psychology, law and the ecological sciences. We also partner with key industry stakeholders in our pursuit to tackle Australia's serious online crime problems.

Originally established as the ANU Cybercrime Observatory with the assistance of a grant led by Professor Rod Broadhurst and Professor Ray Choo, the Observatory is now headquartered at Adelaide University. It maintains strategic affiliations with the ANU and across Australia.

HIstory

The Observatory was originally developed with the assistance of a 2010 Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project grant in 2010 led by Prof Rod Broadhurst and Prof Ray Choo (formerly of the Australian Institute of Criminology and now at University of Texas at San Antonio). In 2012, the laboratory was renamed the ANU Cybercrime Observatory. Professor Roderic Broadhurst and Professor Peter Grabosky established the Observatory with the help of Dr Lennon Chang, Dr Steve Chon, Dr Mamoun Alazab and Dr Nyguen Tran with the aim to help researchers, students and industry connect on cybercrime and security issues. Following Prof Broadhurst’s passing, the Observatory became a national initiative, with ANU as a founding partner.
