Virginia Marshall on sacred sites and water rights issues

The Northern Territory’s largest groundwater extraction licence has traditional owners challenging the science behind the decision and the effectiveness of water laws. ANU RegNet’s Dr Virginia Marshall who co-chairs the national Committee on Aboriginal Water Interests was interviewed on this matter.

Virginia said Australian legislation only sees water through an economic lens, as a resource for extraction like iron ore. But water is much more than that.

“We need to drink it, we need it for the environment, we need it for recreation, we need it for cultural reasons.”
