The Philippines Project is a policy-engaged initiative to stimulate research collaboration between academics and policymakers on the Philippines. Based at the College of Asia and the Pacific of The Australian National University (ANU), the Project aims to support studies that provide salient policy input to economic, political and governance challenges in the Philippines. The Project also endeavours to provide a venue among scholars and practitioners for mutual learning and to share experiences.
Objectives
The Philippines Project aims to:
- build strong bilateral linkages between Australian and Filipino researchers and officials;
- foster policy dialogue between the Philippines and Australia; and
- support innovative research on inclusive economic growth, trade, politics, and governance in the Philippines.
Activities
Governance
The Philippines Project is governed by an advisory board and a sub-committee, and is supported by project collaborators. The advisory board is responsible for determining the strategic and broad policy direction of the Philippines Project. The sub-committee formulates guidelines and procedures for the research grant and fellowship programs.
Gender Equity
The Philippines Project is committed to ensuring that participation to all its activities is open to women and men and that the activities it funds are attentive to gender equity.
The Project is governed by the University’s equal opportunity policy.

Activities
The Philippine update conference brings together leading experts to present and discuss a range of topics in relation to the Philippines. The Update includes presentations on current political and economic developments in the Philippines as well as in-depth analyses of various topics grouped around a central conference theme.
The Philippine forum series provides a scholarly platform to disseminate and discuss research and current developments on economics, governance and politics in the Philippines.
The Philippines Project runs a visiting fellowship program offering approximately five to six researchers and/or policymakers a four to six week fellowship to pursue projects focused on inclusive economic growth, trade, politics and governance in the Philippines.
The Philippines Project provides small research grants for approximately three to four research projects each year to foster collaborative research between Australian and Philippine scholars. The Project supports innovative research focused on inclusive economic growth, trade and governance in the Philippines.
The Philippines Project is committed to providing publication support to relevant research on economic, governance and political developments in the Philippines.
The Philippines Project supports student research and engagement with the Philippines. The Project offers prizes for best paper and poster presentations during the Philippine update conference, provides the opportunity for students to showcase their research through scholarly platforms such as the Philippine forum series, and encourages publication or research outputs.
The ANU Philippines Project PhD scholarship is aimed at producing high-quality research on the key thematic areas and to contribute in fostering linkages between the academic and policy community between the Philippines and Australia through their research project. The scholar is also expected to contribute in the Project activities particularly through the monthly Philippine Forum Series, the biennial Philippine Update Conference, and production of a quarterly review of the Philippines.
