Teachers are an important part of building a safe school culture. In this study, Helene Shin explores the shame management capacities that teachers need to have in order to be leaders in the development of a safe school anti-bullying culture. Surveys were conducted with Australian and Korean teachers about their workplaces, the degree to which they were supported by others and their own capacities to manage shame well. The argument that Shin makes is that if teachers are working in an environment where they are unable to share problems and enjoy the trust of their peers, they will be unable to manage shame adaptively and will be more likely to displace such feelings, in particular anger, on others in the school community. Teachers who are frustrated, angry or disappointed with themselves are unlikely to be able to provide the leadership required to establish an anti-bullying school culture.
