Hilary Charlesworth spoke at the National Human Rights Consultation Public Hearings

As part of the National Human Rights Consultation, the Committee held three days of Public Hearings from 1 to 3 July 2009 in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra. These hearings were an opportunity for Committee members and the public to access more detailed information from human rights experts and to hear from some of those in the community who lodged submissions.

Hilary Charlesworth is the Director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice and Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the ANU.

Hilary Charlesworth: How Universal is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? (Part 2 of 2)

It's 60 years this year since the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. After two years of hard work, and much consultation, the Declaration came into being on the 10th of December. 1948. According to Hilary Charlesworth, while the significance of the Declaration is profound it was, and remains, a radical and controversial document.

Hilary Charlesworth is the Director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice and Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the ANU. This lecture was presented by the La Trobe University Centre for Dialogue.
