In this Menzies Centre for Health Governance webinar, Dr Lauren Carters-White from the SPECTRUM Consortium, UK will discuss findings from her PhD research during which she conducted an analysis of various stakeholders’ views on power dynamics within the debate surrounding online advertising of unhealthy food and drink and its regulation.

Through the operationalisation of Fuchs and Lederer’s framework of instrumental, structural and discursive power, the findings suggested participants were concerned with a lack of access to power within the obesogenic environment and considered regulation (or lack thereof) as a means of re-negotiating those problematic power dynamics. This analysis not only engaged with corporate power, as is the focus of Fuchs and Lederer’s work, but also extended the theoretical framework to include a consideration of non-corporate power as well as State power.

About the speakers

Lauren Carters-White is a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh on the SPECTRUM Consortium, a multi-university, multi-agency research consortium focused on the commercial determinants of health and health inequalities. Lauren’s particular research interests in this area are the marketing of unhealthy commodities and the framing practices of multiple stakeholders within policy debates. Her PhD, completed at the University of Glasgow, examined the policy and public debate surrounding the regulation of unhealthy online food advertising to children.

Yandisa Ngqangashe is a Research Fellow in food regulation and governance at the Menzies Centre for Health Governance in the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) at the ANU. Her PhD was in social sciences (communication) focusing on the effects of food media use on adolescents’ food literacy. Her current research focuses on the architectures of regulation and governance of food policies related to the prevention of diet-related non-communicable diseases.

Sharon Friel is Professor of Health Equity and Director of the Menzies Centre for Health Governance in the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) at the ANU. Sharon was Director of RegNet from 2014-2019. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia and co-Director of the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in the Social Determinants of Health Equity. Her book, Climate Change and the People’s Health was published by OUP in Jan 2019.
