This session builds upon the foundational overview provided in the Social Science Methodologies course through a discussion of common qualitative methods. While it focuses primarily on interviews and focus groups, it will address participant observation briefly as well.

The session covers strategies for building rapport in interviews and focus groups, how to develop an interview guide, how to pose questions, the role of the interviewer/moderator, and how to manage data. Time permitting, the session will also facilitate a preliminary discussion of coding, analysis and theory building, data analysis and writing skills and reflexivity.

Presented by Dr Melanie Pescud, this is a Regulatory Institutions Network (RegNet) Higher Degree Research (HDR) Education Activity. This activitiy is aimed at HDR students, but is open to CAP staff and students wanting to develop or further their skills base.

For more information about RegNet HDR Education Activities, please contact Head of Postgraduate Programs, Dr Kathryn Henne.
