Date & time
The March session of the Human Rights Reading Group will look at Steven Greer’s 2015 article, ‘Is the Prohibition against Torture, Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment Really ‘Absolute’ in International Human Rights Law?’ in Human Rights Law Review. On ANU network computers it can be downloaded here.
Greer’s article can be read in conjunction with a short interview from the New York Review of Books with Mark Danner from December 2014.
The discussion will consider the concept of the “absolute” in international human rights law, and will hopefully feed into a discussion about whether the language of human rights provides, or can provide, any coherent mechanisms for balancing/mediating conflicting rights claims.
