Peter Hughes

The Law Society of NSW

RegNet visitor, Peter Hughes will appear on a panel, Sovereign Borders: Asylum Seekers & the Law hosted by the Law Society of NSW.  Peter will be joined on the panel by President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, Gillian Triggs; Julian Burnside QC and Ali Mojtahedi (Immigration Advice and Rights Centre).

About the Forum: Last year saw the highest total number of refugees under the mandate of the UN High Commission for Refugees since 1996. Pakistan, Lebanon and Iran continue to host the largest numbers of refugees, despite their economic status.

In mid-December the Commonwealth Government strengthened its maritime powers to make it easier to turn boats around at sea. Special clauses make clear that certain acts at sea are authorised despite Australia’s international obligations.

Is sovereignty necessarily at loggerheads with international law? As global conflict escalates, should Australia focus on borders? How should we respond to this complex, global problem?
